Before You Go

At On the Edge, we’ll take care of most of the details of your dream vacation. To make sure it all works out exactly the way we all want it to, there are a few things you can do to prepare. Take a minute to read through these important traveling tips.

Passport:

Allow plenty of time before your trip to get your passports. Click here for passport information.

Insurance:

We highly recommend that you insure your trip.  It is a small added cost that protects your travel dollar and covers you before and during your trip.

Air Travel:

Allow extra time for check-in at airports due to heightened security.  For domestic travel arrive an hour and a half before departure and for international flights you should arrive two and a half hours prior to departure.

Baggage:

  • Remember to budget for the cost of checked baggage as the majority of the airlines now charge for each piece of checked baggage.
  • Most airlines allow 2 checked bags and 1 carry on plus 1 personal bag (purse, laptop, brief case, etc.) per person.
  • Weight limits will vary however, most domestic airlines restrict your checked luggage to 50 lbs. per bag. The largest checked bag may not exceed 62 linear inches (height+length+width). Additional fees above the regular baggage fees will be incurred for excess weight or size.
  • Carry on limit is 45 linear inches (height+length+width) and 40 lbs. Your carryon bag and/or personal bag must fit in the overhead compartment or under the seat.
  • Clearly mark all your bags with identification tags both inside and out.

Reducing Jetlag:

  • Try to sleep on a flight that arrives in the morning.
  • Stay awake during the flight if your plane arrives at night.
  • Stay active during daylight hours, no matter how appealing the bed might look. Keep moving, walk around, and interact with people until the proper time to go to bed.
  • Go to bed as quickly as possible if you cross the Pacific and arrive at your destination at night.
  • Change your watch to the time at your destination before you board the plane.

Before you go:

  • Advise your bank and credit card company you will traveling
  • Ensure that nothing important (passport, ATM & credit cards, etc.) will expire while you’re away.
  • Sift through your wallet and remove extra credit card bills and/or your social security card and anything else you don’t want/need while traveling.
  • Make sure that someone knows your travel plans, and can deal with emergencies in your absence.
  • Check the weather where you will be traveling.
  • Photocopy your passport and credit cards and travel documents.  Leave a copy at home with a friend or relative,  carry copies with you or email them to yourself.
  • Call your cell phone provider to check if your phone will work and to plan for any additional fees.
